South Florida Flowers - May
Bougainville, Gardenia, Caladium, Hibiscus, Crossandria, Frangipani

Bougainville: grows as a thorny vine and comes in
purple, red, and orange. The colors are actually
leaves. The flower is a tiny white bloom contained
within the background of the colored leaves that
become brighter the dryer the weather.
Caladium: This is another colored leaf. They come in
different colors ranging from a primarily green to the
brilliant red-green you see here. The flower is a
wonderful white. The one pictured is over 5 inches
long and the largest leaves are in excess of eleven
inches.
Gardenia is one of the most delectable scents to
enjoy. And then there is the bloom...growing on a
small shrub.
Hibiscus comes in all sorts of shades. The shrub can get
long legged if not pruned regularly. But, even the long
limbs, seemingly untamed, can be most plentiful in its gifts
of the very large blooms of 3 or more inches.
Frangipani has these long stems that erupt into shades of
pinks with highlights of white. And they also fill the May air
with sweetness.
Crossandrias provide the splash of orange in their
smallish blooms. The plants stay under a foot and the
flowers bloom for a good part of the year under good
conditions. A very hearty and colorful friend to any
gardener.
