Life As I See It, Randy Burns,
"Using the Gutless Net." (Advice from the Circus)
December 22, 2000
When your dreams become frozen, skate on the damn things.
Dreams are just things no matter how much they mean or meant to
you. Don't ever belittle things, learn what they are. They are the
workers, the essentials you need to get over anything. Fallen
dreams hurt deeply, but they will eventually fade into a semi-comfortable form of melancholy. Your soul will widen because you
opened your heart to a lover, a good friend, or a dream. If it didn't
work out, so what! Its come time to use things. As I've often said,
there are zillions of things, so it shouldn't take much creativity to
find the ones that will take your mind away from it and make you
feel better. Things were made to use! I have absolutely no sympathy for people who remain
depressed without giving them so much as a try. If it takes years before you use them, then
it will take years to "get over it." Why not start right away? You freely gave your heart, left
yourself out there with no net, and now your depressed? You had balls, man. So many
people don't have the nerve to do that, to do what you did. Hell, I can name you ten right
now.
Though the odds may have been against you, your wide-open effort served to broaden your
life through experience. After all, isn't that what you wanted? Isn't that what you were trying
to achieve? Success after success can teach only that. Now you can teach both, with
knowledge to match the experience you've acquired. To know both success and rejection
gives you a wealth made to share with others. If you don't, then wallow forever in
depression, we don't need you.
Oh, and next time, use the gutless net. You should never have been out there to begin with.
